The process of applying for an EU Blue Card from South Africa for Germany can basically be divided into two steps. First, an entry visa for Germany from South Africa (so-called national D visa) must be applied for in order to be able to enter Germany to apply for the EU Blue Card for nationals from South Africa.
Here, the requirements for the EU Blue Card and for obtaining the entry visa are usually congruent.
The requirements that must be met in order to obtain an EU Blue Card for South Africans are as follows:
- Hold a university degree recognized in Germany,
- if necessary, possession of a professional license required for the desired profession,
- and fulfillment of the minimum salary threshold.
Specialists in IT benefit from an exception: they can obtain an EU Blue Card even without a university degree. However, they must have worked in IT professions for three years in the past seven years and be able to prove that they have theoretical knowledge on a par with a university degree. The German bureaucracy forces the applicant to submit the same application twice: On the one hand, to obtain the work visa for entry, which makes it possible to apply for the EU Blue Card in Germany in the first place. On the other hand, when applying for the electronic residence title in the form of the EU Blue Card in Germany.
Unfortunately, South Africa does not belong to the list of privileged countries whose citizens can enter Germany without an entry visa and apply for an EU Blue Card directly on the spot. Therefore, the application for an entry visa is mandatory when acquiring a Blue Card EU for South Africans.

The EU Blue Card is linked to a university degree recognized in Germany. It is not easy to find out whether your university degree is recognized in Germany. Application with entry visa
South African citizens require an entry visa to apply for an EU Blue Card in Germany. The same and other problems may arise here as with the actual application for the EU Blue Card. We are happy to advise and support you during this process in order to make this first step towards the EU Blue Card in Germany as easy as possible.
In particular, we would like to draw your attention to the accelerated skilled worker procedure in accordance with Section 81a AufenthG, which offers a number of advantages and can therefore shorten the process of obtaining the desired residence permit considerably. In some cases, an appointment with the German diplomatic mission abroad is no longer necessary. Instead, it may be sufficient to simply submit the required documents. A decision on your application submitted in this way should then be made within a few weeks from the time the documents are submitted.
