Is there any entitlement to severance pay at all?

It is often assumed that there is a legal entitlement to severance pay following a termination. As a rule, German labor law does not provide for such a claim. The exception is a claim to severance pay in the event of termination for operational reasons or on the basis of a corresponding provision in a social plan, collective agreement or individual agreement.
