New measurements on Fiat Ducato-based motorhomes confirm limit values exceeded

Since December 2020, the Emissions Control Institute (EKI) of the German Environmental Aid (DUH) has examined a total of 7 different Fiat Ducato-based motorhomes.Among other things, the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were determined.

The model with the most conspicuous measured values was a Fiat Ducato Multijet Vany Elegance with first registration in June 2019. It exceeded the limits of the Euro 6b standard by a factor of 12.2. The nitrogen oxide (NOx) limit for such vehicles is 125 mg/km. However, the Fiat Ducato camper emitted an average of 1,520 mg/km during the 8 test runs. In a test with a cold engine, an increase in nitrogen oxide emissions to 2,377 mg/km was detected, thus extremely exceeding the limit values.

According to a press release dated December 8, 2021,two motorhomes were again measured to have very high pollutant emissions. The Fiat Ducato 150 Multijet (Weinsberg Caraloft) and Fiat Ducato 130 Multijet (Hobby K60) models showed extremely high nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the latest EKI measurements. In some cases, the legal limit of 125 mg NOx/km was exceeded by a factor of 11.

Values of 1,285 mg NOx/km and 1,052 mg NOx/km were measured for the Fiat Ducato 150 Multijet and Fiat Ducato 130 Multijet motorhomes tested, exceeding the applicable limit value by a factor of 8 to 11.The authority has so far remained inactive, although "high nitrogen oxide emissions due to unreliability" in the Ducato models were confirmed in writing to DUH.

However, improved values were measured for two retrofitted with an SCR catalytic converter (with urea injection), 130 Multijet Dethleffs Globebus (Euro 5, 2010) and Fiat Ducato 140 Multijet Sunlight V66 (Euro 5, 2020). NOx emissions were just 18 mg/km, well below the limit of 280 mg/km.

Even with a cold engine, the limit value of 80 mg NOx/km was complied with.

DUH demands recall of all affected Fiat Ducato models

The renewed poor measurements have prompted DUH to call on Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing to immediately recall the vehicles with excessive emissions and order hardware retrofits. So far, the Federal Ministry of Transport has remained inactive.
